Avanti at Bonneville
Dave Bloomberg, also known as the "Avanti Kid," won the Bonneville Speed Week race for 2002 with his 1963 Studebaker Avanti. Mike Pakucko was crew chief and Mike Benbennick was co-driver on Dave's team. Dave beat the previous record of 195.640 mph by 2.5 mph with 198.143 mph. The record was in the NSDNT (305 CI) Classic Production Supercharged Sedan class. Originally equipped with a 250 hp engine, the car was modified to acheive 650 hp and incorporates racing accoutrements that help achieve top speeds. Bonneville Speedway provides a five-mile, straight-course race where one car at a time races. Contestants use the first two miles to get up to speed and are timed at the three-, four- and five-mile sections of the racecourse. This is done twice, using an average of the two times for the final mph total.
