20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is the Jules Verne tale filmed by the Disney Studio. It stars Kirk Douglas, James Mason, and Peter Lorre. Big studio, big budget science fiction was a rarity in the 1950's. In later years many of Jules Verne's works were filmed, but none of them compare to this Disney effort. The Nautilus submarine is superbly designed. The giant squid is one of the most effective sea monsters ever achieved. The scene of the underwater burial is memorable. Douglas's scenes with the seal are charming. More adventure than science, but entertaining.
