The Day The Earth Stood Still was directed by Robert Wise who would later direct “Star Trek, The Motion Picture.” The screenplay was based on Harry Bates' novel, Farewell To The Master. Patricia Neal stars with Michael Rennie as Klaatu and Hugh Marlowe as her fiance. Gort, a robot with a death ray guards the saucer that brought them to Earth and saves Klaatu when Patricia Neal utters her alien words, “Klaatu, barada nikto.” Unusual for its portrayal of a benevolent alien, the film implores humankind to establish worldwide stability or risk annihilation by an interstellar federation.
