In March of 1989 John J. Cafaro unveiled a four door sedan version of the Avanti at the Greater New York International Automobile Show. The four door Avanti body is based on preliminary designs by
Raymond Loewy. It is an excellent tribute to the versatality of the original design. The original
Studebaker Avanti was a 2-door, 4-passenger sport coupe that dared to rival the Corvette Stingray and the Jaguar XK-E, but was more akin to the Buick Riviera. Avanti was later stretched into a longer, luxury coupe, lost its iconic roofline to a convertible, and then shed its racy profile to become a tasteful Loewy-inspired 4-door.
