The Studebaker Avanti was designed in the Spring of 1961. Within two weeks Raymond Loewy's design team presented a clay model. The final result, introduced a year later at the New York Auto Show, defined the shape of generations of domestic and international nameplates. Following the inaugural Avanti Awards, Metro-Detroit High School Car Design Competition in 2008, a national and international challenge was launched for 2009. The winning designers earned $100 (American) and had their work entered in the finals for the 2009 Avanti Awards. Students can enter as many designs as they wish. No entry fee was required. Contest rules followed 2008 with a single exception: The model to be designed was the 2010 Avanti NXT, the "next generation" of the classic make. 2009 Awards Judges were looking for original, functional, and crisply rendered designs seating 4-5 in a two-door coupe. Any art medium can be used: charcoals, pastels, oils, watercolors, pencils, inks, airbrush or mixed media. Computer-enhanced entries with color and halftones are acceptable as long as they contain no photo elements of real cars. Photography by Philip Dattilo. Contact:
