1970 Avanti II that I purchased in December 2006 and I have put almost 40,000 miles on since then. The paint is a custom mix "Electric Candy Copper" and was finished one year ago. The drive train has been completely redone. The new engine is an aluminum head 383 SBC crate engine that went through a cam change and head porting to achieve 494 hp (dyne). A 700R4 trans (with electric lockup) replaced the Studebaker unit and a Currie 9" Ford rear end (3.50) went in place of the original Dana. Four wheel disc brakes. The rims are the Magnums (painted to match), but they are 16 inch. There were two reasons for the 16" rims - extra ground clearance on some of these MS roads, and they were the only option in getting a 180 mph tire. The interior will be the last to be done - this fall. This is a daily driver, and is more fun than a person should be allowed to have on the highway.

Stainless dash and console facing. Tilt wheel, air, cruise, remote driver's side rear view mirror, electric antenna, Magnum 500 wheels, manual windows and locks. I removed the original Blaupunkt radio (still have it) and installed a Sanyo radio/cassette with graphic equalizer and amp mounted in the trunk in 1984 (still works great). |

I call this car a "maintained original ", which means the exterior has some deterioration, such as stone chips on the front end, and some cracks in the fiberglass around the hood opening, similar to a number of cars I've seen. On the positive side, the car was painted Porsche sepia (medium straight shade brown ) with a flawless matching vinyl interior. The odometer shows 21K miles, which could be true, based on the condition of the car. It shows well at shows around the Detroit area, my favorite being the annual Ypsilanti Orphan Car Show. |

I bought this car from Mr. Hoyt Lambert of Dover Florida on October 16th, 2013. Having only 50,600 miles the car is original and in very good condition. My plans are to clean and preserve this fine example of an original one-owner Avanti. Built from March 1979 through June 1979 this car is loaded with optional equipment including power windows and locks, moon-roof, reclining seats, full leather interior, tilt, cruise, AM/FM 8-track player, rear defroster, automatic, air, undercoating, and intermittent wipers. There is no rust in/on the hog troughs. I have been enjoying the process of cleaning everything and bringing this car as close to original as I can make it. Everything works as it should which is rare considering the age. One repaint in 2008 to restore the Florida sun bleached exterior. Root Beer Brown Metallic with natural leather interior. |
