According The Hagerty Price Guide, prices for Avantis have risen 30 percent over five years— from $30,000 to $40,000. Prices have been pulled up by a stronger market for supercharged cars, which have traded at high-end auctions in the high five- to six-figure range. Expect to pay $10,000 more for a supercharged car. What’s buoying the market for the Avanti? The continued interest in mid-century modernism is one contributor. Also, the Avanti was Studebaker’s final car. After struggles to meet demand, quality problems and credibility issues, Studebaker closed shop in the U.S. at the end of 1963. This lends the Avanti a place in the ongoing interest in “orphan” brands like Jensen, Tucker and DeLorean that took risks and charged ahead of their time. But it mainly comes down to the enduring eccentricity of the design. –
